This is one of the most dichotomous regions of the U.S. The center of Appalachia is in Eastern Kentucky, specifically the coal mining region. In honor of Banned Books Week, I want to address one my favorite books, which is set on one of my favorite geographical locations.Īppalachia is a part of the United States many know little about. Thus, Banned Book Week was created in response to the increasing number of challenges to books. In 1982, however, there was a renewal in efforts to ban books in schools and public libraries across the United States. Most post-Civil War challenges were over books that were considered “indecent,” even though no one could agree on what was indecent and what was not. In the U.S., banned book history began when the Southern states banned Uncle Tom’s Cabin. Banned Book Display courtesy of Forsyth County Public Library, Cumming, GA

So they didn’t just not know what to do when she died they had no idea they had to do anything. When they start investigating, it turns out Grandma wasn’t just doing the regular town witch stuff she was also keeping the ordinary folk ignorant of the fae (the magical creatures) around them. The opening cliffhanger resolution leads into witch Orla explaining to mortal Jo how her witch grandma wasn’t buried right (for a witch-or anyone, really), and it’s causing the disturbances around town. Mamo #2’s even better than the first one. Milledge fluidly paces the issue-starting with a cliffhanger resolution through a bunch of character development and reveals. They don’t feel like two issues slapped together, either. I just thought creator Sas Milledge had some preternatural sense of pacing she does have it, but the issues are also double-sized. While reading the first issue, I didn’t realize Mamo issues were double-size. 6/8/2023 0 Comments The jungle book kiplingBut, secondly, every story needs opponents to move the plot forward In this case, the evil figures are mainly Shere Khan the tiger, and Kaa the snake. At some point of the story, these animals attempt to return Mowgli to his rightful community. The boy makes numerous friends in the jungle and is often guided and advised. Firstly, Mowgli would not have survived if it was not for the help of the pack of wolves that subsequently raised him. The tale presents the two antagonistic sides of the animal kingdom. Kipling admired the wild beauty of India and this is reflected in his exotic descriptions and lavish narratives. (2013), “The childhood and youth spent in India, on the one hand, and English intellectual formation, on the other hand, made him a strange mix, which we meet many personalities of British culture” (pp. Some scholars argue that the diversity of his works is directly related to his cultural upbringing. Kipling’s story can be looked at through various lenses as it is constituted of different layers and levels of meanings. They have helped me grow into my identity as a Black individual and as a Black person who strives to be an ally to those who live further in the margins, such as other Black queer women and my Black trans and gender-nonconforming family whose intersections often result in historical erasure. I consider these books to be critical, must-read texts, and most of these are staples on my personal shelf. Literature as a way to see beyond yourself and to help in realizing the part you play in other people's oppression. But there is also a time for literature as activism. A true zealot of the written word, I'm one who uses literature like others use Netflix: as an escape, a way to see myself, and a way to explore new worlds. I see myself as the quintessential book lover. It is the only way to dismantle the oppressive caste systems in America. It is not enough to be silent, or to be "colorblind," or to consider yourself "not racist." We must all be completely and utterly anti-racist. Black people are dying, and systemic anti-Black racism and white supremacy is our killer. Nor is it the time to rest on "not knowing" or "not understanding" what is happening in the world. This is not the time to revel in ignorance. This volume is highly recommended for lovers of fantasy fiction, and it would make for a fantastic addition to any collection.
